History has been made on the soils of Africa, two days after Sierra Leone’s (50th) and Togo’s Independence day and the same day of the British Monarch wedding of Prince Williams and Kate. Miss West Africa, the most reknowned and popular international African beauty pageant took place in the Gambia. The emerging beautiful queen to scoop the crown was none other than.
The first queen to win a competition on the soils of Africa goes by the name of Yassin Jagne, a 20 year old girl of true African beauty, currently residing in Kotu with her parents. She is a diploma student in business management and French with have a passion for modeling.
This is an exciting day not only for Gambia, but for all of West Africa. 3 years ago, Miss West Africa was a small event that took place in London discovering the most determined queen of all, Amina Kamara, who vowed herself to work in the fields of bringing awareness to Sickle Cell as well as promoting West African culture. Now we are in a moment where for the Miss West Africa 2011 title, there will be 20 or more sub events, all discovering a Miss West Africa queen in their own countries promoting culture, issues and fundraising for West African charities, and whom will all later compete for the International title.
Miss West Africa Gambia is the 3rd event to take place following Miss West Africa UK won by Astride Costa from Guinea Bissau, and Miss West Africa Canada won by Nina Erharbor from Nigeria. Yassin Jagne is now the forth queen to be crowned including the selected Miss West Africa Liberia, Cassandra Bornstein. But without doubt, Gambia is the 1st ever West African country to host a Miss West Africa event. Hence why the crowning of this moment had to be done by the Vice President, a great achiever and the Minister of Women Affairs, Dr Isatou Njie Saidy.
What also makes this an even great day for Gambia is another queen has been vetted and selected by the organizers in Germany, this young lady rallied the most support of over 600 people to for her to be chosen as Miss West Africa Germany. Miss West Africa Germany 2011 goes by the name Mariama Drammeh (www.misswestafricagermany.com)and she is also of Gambian descent, now confirming two definite Gambians to be competing in the Miss West Africa International finals in December. Founder and organised, Nana Tamakloe stated, “I’m so proud of Sass Visa Agency for putting all this together. You learn more everyday, and I am honored to have done my bit bringing light towards a nation with such a respected African government. Yassin, is also now featured on the international website www.misswestafrica.com and vows to maintain her responsibilities as a beauty queen of West Africa.
